Ribbon red is the carpet colour of celebration. It is the red of a Bukhara wedding flat-weave, the red of a Turkmen hatchli ground, the red of the velvet brocades that lined Mughal pavilions for state occasions. The over-dyed patchwork tradition reaches for that same saturation through a single madder-and-cochineal bath, applied across vintage Turkish and Persian fragments that have already been cut and re-knotted into a new gridded ground.
This 12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) carpet was assembled by five weavers across close to seven months. About 4.7 million hand-tied knots on a cotton foundation, the panels worked from vintage carpets that had already lived twenty to fifty years before being cut, sorted, and re-knotted into the new field. The over-dye was struck in a copper vat with madder root for the warmth, cochineal for the depth, and an alum mordant to fix the colour without dulling the wool. Six immersions over four days set the red at its final saturation.
The composition
A field of unified ribbon red holds the entire 12 by 15 foot rectangle. Inside the red, a grid of unequal panels carries the ghost of a different older carpet in every cell, a medallion in one, a Heriz spandrel in another, a Caucasian diamond in a third. The over-dye flattens every original palette into a tonal family of the red, so the field reads as a single composition rather than a quilt. Madder over cochineal is one of the most light-stable dye combinations in the workshop. The red will deepen for the first three years and then hold for the next forty.
What you are buying
Over-dyed patchwork carpets in this density and at this scale sell with Western dealers between $9,000 and $14,000 when available. The piece is offered here at clearance pricing well below that figure. The discount reflects inventory turnover rather than any reduction in materials or method. The hand-knotted wool construction means the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) is the format for a long living room, an open-plan dining and lounge arrangement, or a library built around a central reading bench. The red asks for quiet around it, plaster walls in bone or warm grey, walnut floors, undyed linen and leather. It will not share the room with strongly patterned upholstery, and that is the point. The carpet is the colour event in the room.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. With this care, the rug holds for eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
