A red carpet at this scale has a different job than a decorative one. In Mughal painting and Safavid manuscript margins, red was the colour of formal gathering, the floor on which a court convened. The ribbon-red over-dye in this patchwork carries that older logic into a contemporary register, taking vintage carpet panels with mixed origins and bathing them into a single field of saturated red so the room beneath the rug behaves as a single composed space.

Three weavers spent six months on the construction. Vintage carpet sections were collected, trimmed to a measured grid, and seamed onto a fresh cotton foundation. Each panel was over-dyed in madder root with a small addition of cochineal to push the red toward the cooler ribbon end of the spectrum rather than the brick. The hand-spun wool, originally from village looms aged two to four decades, holds the dye more deeply than fresh fibre because the lanolin had time to dissipate.

The composition

An unbroken field of red reads first. Up close the field becomes a record of the carpets that fed it. Floral medallions, geometric guard borders, tribal lozenges. Each panel carries its own history under the unifying bath. Some areas hold the dye fully; others let through a hint of the original ochre or rust. The asymmetry is the point.

What you are buying

A patchwork of this density and scale lists with Western dealers in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. The construction is hand-knotted in both the source carpets and the reassembly. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the madder will continue oxidising toward a deeper, plummier red across the first decade.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the canonical scale for a long dining hall or a primary living room. Red of this saturation pairs with bone walls, raw oak floors, and brass. It carries oxblood leather and mid-century walnut. It does not pair well with cool grey or cobalt upholstery, which fights rather than complements the warmth of the field.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn twice a year. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth; do not rub. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. Madder gains depth with each cleaning, and the over-dye stabilises further with every wash.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
