Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Purple Passion 11081 9' x 12'

Purple in the Persian dye tradition was historically the rarest of the rainbow. Madder gave reliable reds; indigo gave reliable blues; the overlap, true purple, required either a rare cochineal import or a careful sequence of double-bath dyeing that few workshops controlled. The shade in this carpet, called purple passion in the modern Indian overdye vocabulary, takes that historical difficulty as a starting point and resolves it through a single deep violet immersion of already-coloured vintage wool.

The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field is built from patches lifted out of mid-twentieth-century Persian and Anatolian rugs, the source pieces dating roughly from 1945 through 1985. Three weavers in India worked the new piece for around four months. They squared the salvaged wool by hand, reassembled the patches on a fresh cotton warp, knotted in fresh joining stitches between the squares, and lowered the entire stable field into a single bath of saturated violet dye that the older fibres absorbed unevenly.

The composition

A field that reads, at glance, as one deep purple, and on closer reading as a layered chord of related violets. Patches with old indigo grounds now sit closer to royal purple. Patches with original madder reds have shifted into magenta. Patches that began with ivory or cream backgrounds glow as the brightest violet across the field. Faded medallions and half-borders drift below the surface like the lines of a watercolour drawing seen through paper.

The pricing on this listing represents direct sourcing from the Indian workshop tradition rather than a downstream margin. The wool already carries between forty and eighty years of patina at the moment of purchase. The carpet appreciates with continued use as the dye seats further into the fibre and the patina deepens through honest use.

Purple at this scale gives a room aristocratic gravity without going theatrical. The carpet works under a long sectional sofa in cream bouclé or oatmeal linen, with brass lighting and walnut tables warming the field above. Reads beautifully under a long dining table where pendant light pulls the violet undertones forward in the evening. Pairs cleanly with strong dark green walls or with a quiet, chalky off-white. Avoid printed cushions or rugs in the same view.

Conservation

Weekly vacuum, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Rotate the carpet 180 degrees at the start of each summer to even out window-light fading. Blot any spill outward from the centre on a dry cotton cloth and let the wool air dry in shade without heat. Specialist hand wash every six years. With this care the carpet has the better part of a century ahead of it.
