The wool is hand-spun and the slight irregularity of its diameter gives the saturation its characteristic depth. The finishing crew sheared the pile evenly to balance the original variation in pile heights between fragments.

The composition

A deep saturated purple, leaning toward burgundy where original red grounds drank the dye and shifting toward violet where lighter pile took it more readily. Faded medallion fragments and vine work register beneath the over-dye as low-contrast silhouettes. The colour reads heaviest in north light and lifts toward red under candle or warm bulb lighting. That spectral shift is part of the appeal of any genuinely complex pigment.
