The over-dye process traces back to the 1990s, when a generation of weavers and dealers in Anatolia began experimenting with second-bath colour as a way to rescue worn carpets that no longer suited contemporary interiors. A purple-passion bath sits at the saturated end of that tradition, drawing on cochineal and indigo combined in a single dipping. The rug in front of you was assembled from vintage fragments, each one bathed twice before assembly to bring the older reds, oranges, and ochres into a single violet field.

Three weavers shared this loom for six months. The salvaged sections were measured, trimmed, and edge-stitched into a planned grid. Underneath, a new cotton foundation was tied so the weave tension stayed even across the seams. The wool is hand-spun village fleece from carpets that had lived on Anatolian floors for two to four decades, which is why the pile carries a slightly oily sheen that fresh wool cannot replicate.

The composition

Saturated purple reads first. Up close the field breaks into a mosaic of violet, aubergine, mulberry, and the occasional flash of original rust where the over-dye thinned. Borders, medallions, and tribal motifs from the source carpets surface as ghosts inside the new field. The geometry is asymmetric on purpose; the eye is not allowed to settle in one place.
