Olive is the dye colour that requires patience. The shade itself sits between green and brown with a hint of yellow, and on new wool it tends to read either as pond water or as army surplus. The patchwork tradition takes a long way around the problem. Instead of trying to make new yarn behave like old olive, it overdyes wool that has already lived through forty years of accumulated colour and lets the underlying patina mediate the green into something close to the colour of a working orchard.
The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field is built from patches cut out of Anatolian and Persian rugs woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. Three weavers in India worked together for around four months to square the salvaged wool, reassemble it on a fresh cotton warp, hand-knot new seam stitches between the patches, and lower the whole field into a single immersion bath of olive dye. Each square took the colour at its own rate.
The composition
Olive across the entire field, but the green never settles into a single value. Patches with strong original red ground now read brown-olive. Patches with original indigo pull toward forest. Patches with ivory backgrounds glow almost chartreuse where the dye sat fully. Half-medallions, ghost borders, and fragments of vine work surface and disappear like the under-drawing of a painting. The discipline of the patchwork grid keeps the green from drifting into camouflage.
What you are buying
Comparable patchwork rugs of this size sell at four to six thousand pounds through European interior dealers and are positioned as collectible textile art rather than utilitarian flooring. This listing represents direct workshop sourcing from India. The wool itself is forty to eighty years old, hand-knotted in the original tradition before its second life as a square. Use only deepens the patina further. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the same way a well-cared-for leather chair improves with years of sitting.
The piece in a room
Olive at this scale is a mature, gallery-ready ground. The carpet partners well with bone walls, with raw oak or walnut floors, and with linen or natural wool upholstery. Reads particularly well in a study or library where leather, brass, and bookbound paper draw the warmth out of the field. Avoid placing strongly patterned upholstery directly above; the carpet expects to be the dominant chromatic gesture.
Conservation
Weekly vacuum on suction only, beater bar off, in the direction of the pile. Rotate the carpet a half turn at the start of each spring. Treat spills by blotting outward with a clean cotton cloth, never by rubbing. Schedule a wool-conservator wash every six years. The carpet rewards a patient owner with decades of use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
