Olive is a quiet colour, and the carpet trade has not always known how to handle it. The over-dye family arrived at olive by routing weld and walnut hull through a small indigo correction, then applying the bath cold over salvaged wool already carrying dark grounds. The result is the colour of an oil bottle held against a window, neither yellow nor green nor brown but the average of all three, the kind of olive the painter Morandi would have used as the dominant glaze on a still life of three vessels.
This rug was hand-knotted across roughly four months on a vertical Indian loom by two weavers and a finisher. Antique pile fragments were cut, sorted by tone, and re-knotted onto a cotton warp before the body was sent to the wash team for the olive over-dye. The wool is hand-spun mountain fleece. The over-dye was applied in two passes to build depth, with the second pass weighted slightly more toward indigo to keep the green register from flattening.
The composition
A continuous olive field, deepening into bronze at older red-ground fragments and lifting into khaki where the underlying pile was originally lighter. Vine work, medallion fragments, and border lines surface as faded silhouettes under the over-dye. In daylight the carpet reads green-grey; under warm artificial light it leans bronze. That tonal mobility is the design intent.
What you are buying
Olive-saturated patchwork carpets are scarcer than red and blue variants because the dye is harder to land cleanly without slipping into mud. Comparable hand-finished pieces move through European specialist dealers at $4,000 to $7,500. The rug here is the same construction, in the same wool, finished to the same standard. Olive over-dye matures gracefully, gaining a slightly cooler register over a decade rather than fading, and the carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a smaller library, a primary dressing room, or a guest sitting area with two armchairs. The olive palette pairs with chalk walls, raw oak, terracotta pottery, brass lighting, and any natural leather. It works particularly well alongside black-and-white photographic prints and unupholstered wooden seating.
Conservation
Weekly vacuuming on suction only keeps the pile lifted. Turn the carpet a half rotation every six months. Spills are best handled with cold water on cotton cloth, blotted from the outside in. Avoid commercial detergents; they strip the over-dye unevenly. A specialist wool wash every five years revives the saturation. With this approach, the carpet runs forty years of household use and remains conservable.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
