Patchwork carpets emerged in the early 2000s as a way to give a second life to vintage Anatolian and Persian weavings that had spent forty or fifty years on the floors of village houses. Workshops in India and Turkey began collecting these carpets, cutting them into measured panels, and re-weaving them into a single composition with a new backing. The olive-toned ground in this rug pulls together fragments that began life under different ceilings, in different decades, with different dye lots.

Three weavers worked the loom over six months. Each of the salvaged sections was edge-bound, then over-dyed in an indigo-and-weld bath that pushed the older reds and rusts toward a unifying olive cast. The wool is hand-spun from the original village fleeces, denser and oilier than commercial yarn. The cotton foundation was tied fresh underneath so the weight and tension match across the seams.

The composition

An asymmetric grid of olive, sage, deep moss, and the occasional brick-tone breakthrough where the over-dye did not fully take. Some panels carry the geometric border of a Yastik. Others retain the corner of a Heriz medallion. The overall effect is a single field that records the histories underneath it. Pattern reads at a distance as a tonal wash; at three feet it resolves into discrete chapters.
