Mazzarine blue, sometimes spelled mazarine after the seventeenth-century French cardinal whose collection of Persian rugs first introduced the colour to European cataloguing, is a deep saturated blue with a faint violet undertone, darker than ultramarine and warmer than navy. It is the blue of a Mediterranean evening sea seen from a balcony, or of the indigo sky just after the last of the sun. Reproducing it across forty patches of vintage hand-knotted wool requires the discipline of a single immersion overdye.
The patches in this 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carpet were salvaged from Anatolian and Persian rugs woven between roughly 1945 and 1985 and recomposed in India over four months by a team of three weavers. They cut the source wool into roughly hand-sized squares, laid them out on a fresh cotton warp, knotted new seam stitches by hand between the patches, and finished by lowering the entire field into a deep mazzarine bath. The blue settled into each square at a slightly different value depending on the colour underneath.
The composition
The dominant note is a single deep blue, but the chord is layered. Patches with old red grounds shift the blue toward damson. Patches with original ivory or cream pull it toward a clearer mid-blue. Faded patterns surface throughout the field, half-medallions and corner spandrels just visible as low ghosts beneath the dye. The patchwork grid keeps the eye organised across the surface; the variation in tone keeps the field from going flat under interior light.
What you are buying
Carpets of this size, construction, and vintage are sold through European boutique dealers in the four to six thousand pound range. The price here reflects direct sourcing from the Indian workshop tradition and not a re-sale margin from a Western galley. The wool is forty to eighty years old at the moment of new sale, hand-knotted in the original tradition long before its second life as a patch. As use continues, the dye settles, the patina deepens, and the carpet only improves.
The piece in a room
Mazzarine blue at this scale is a confident, gallery-ready ground. The carpet supports white, ivory, or pale stone walls cleanly. Black leather and dark wood read beautifully across it. Brass lamps and lighter linens warm the field from above. Sits well under a long sectional or under a long dining table; in either case the blue should be allowed to dominate, with no other strong chroma competing in the same room.
Conservation
Run a soft-suction vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Rotate the carpet a half turn at the start of each summer to keep window light from fading any one strip faster than the rest. Spills go cleanly with prompt blotting on a cotton cloth. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every six years. The carpet rewards careful handling with eighty years of usable life.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
