Mazzarine blue is a deep saturated indigo with the slightest violet undertone, named for the seventeenth-century Cardinal Mazarin who favoured the tone in court textiles. As an overdye the colour has to hold its depth without sliding into either pure indigo or pure violet, and the bath must be set at a temperature that allows the older wool to absorb the dye fully.

Older hand-knotted wool sections were recovered, sheared, and washed clean of their previous dye. Two artisans worked the dye phase over roughly four months, lowering each piece into a Mazzarine blue bath for forty-eight hours at controlled temperature. A finisher then assembled the dyed patches onto a cotton support and trimmed the pile to six millimetres with a closing hand-shear.

The composition

A field of deep saturated blue that holds tonal weight across the rug, with some patches reading closer to pure indigo and others carrying a faint violet undertone. The seams between patches are quiet. Underlying carpet patterns ghost through as the faintest tonal shifts. Under candlelight the blue settles into near-black with the slightest cool edge. Over two years the colour will deepen and the wool will gain the polish older fibre develops underfoot.

What you are buying

European patchwork overdyes of this scale and construction are routinely sold at four to six lakh through Western dealers. This piece is offered direct from the Indian workshop. The constituent wool is older and denser than any new spinning, and the carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) holds a primary living room or a study lined with bookshelves. The Mazzarine blue ground works against cream plaster walls, against deep walnut joinery, and against pale oak floors. It pairs with brass and aged bronze lighting, with leather upholstery in cognac or oxblood, and with mid-century walnut furniture. The rug grounds rooms with high ceilings.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth from the edge inward. Avoid bleach and strong solvents. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
