Mazzarine is a navy that runs deeper than indigo. The name traces to the cardinal Mazarin's seventeenth-century French court, where the colour was used in the lining of state robes because it photographed almost black under candlelight and revealed its blue depth only in daylight. The dye lineage is long, and the patchwork over-dye family applies the same logic, taking salvaged antique pile and saturating it in indigo until the carpet reads near-black at night and resolves into deep navy in the sun.

Three weavers worked this carpet over roughly four months on a vertical loom in India. Hand-cut fragments of older wool pile were re-knotted across a cotton warp, then the assembled body was lowered cold into an indigo bath and pulled through a second pass for depth. The wool is hand-spun and absorbs indigo at slightly different rates depending on its original dye history, which is why a mazzarine rug shows movement under raking light rather than registering as flat.

The composition

One commanding deep blue, with darker basaltic pulls at the seams and softer slate flickers where older worn pile took less dye. Underneath the over-dye, vine and medallion silhouettes survive as low-contrast echoes that the eye finds only on closer reading. The carpet looks heavier than its actual weight because the saturation reads as mass. In a sunlit room, the navy lifts; in lamp light, it sits.

What you are buying

Comparable over-dyed patchwork carpets in deep navy move through European auction at $4,000 to $7,500 in clean condition. This is the same construction, on the same loom type, in real wool over cotton, finished by hand shear. Indigo over-dye is the most stable of the over-dye palettes and the easiest to conserve over a generation. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the colour shifts toward a softer marine blue over decades rather than fading flat.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits cleanly under a primary bed in a smaller bedroom, or as the central island of a study with two facing armchairs. The navy palette pairs with white plaster walls, oak floors, brass and bronze fittings, and any warm leather upholstery. Avoid placing it next to a strongly blue painting; the rug expects to hold the cool register of the room.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Rotate the carpet end to end twice a year. Blot spills with cold water and a white cotton cloth; alkaline cleaners and chlorine bleach destabilise indigo, so avoid them entirely. A specialist wool wash every five years preserves the saturation. With this routine, the carpet runs forty plus years and remains a candidate for further conservation beyond that horizon.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
