The piece was knotted in India by a single weaver on a vertical loom over 2 to 3 months. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in small lots before it reached the loom, then tied row by row against a cotton warp and weft. The piece was washed after cutting from the loom and finished by hand-shearing to even the pile and bring the drawing forward at the right relief.

The composition

Blue carries the field with a depth that only comes from wool taken through multiple dye baths. The pattern resolves at the scale of a room, not at the scale of a sample. The colour shifts by a perceptible degree from one end of the rug to the other, the signature of plant-based dyeing rather than a fault in the work.
