Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Mazzarine Blue 11079 10' x 14'

Mazzarine is the deep, slightly warm blue that European silk-weavers and book-binders adopted from the Italian word for the blue of the late evening sky. In wool the colour calls for indigo set hot with a small reduction of madder folded into the bath, which warms the blue without pulling it toward purple. This patchwork edition uses that register to overdye a body of older hand-knotted fragments into a single dark, considered blue field with the underlying classical pattern languages still readable.

The 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) carpet was assembled and finished by three to four weavers in India over close to seven months. Each contributing fragment was hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation in the asymmetric Persian structure before being cut, sewn, washed, and dipped in the unifying mazzarine bath. A finishing crew then spent two weeks shearing the joined surface by hand to bring it to a uniform low pile, which is what lets the deep blue tone read continuously across the rug.

The composition

A grave, deeply saturated blue field. Beneath the dye surface the medallions, vines, and palmettes of the older fragments behave as faint pattern memory rather than as dominant motif. The original reds turn to plum; the original ochres turn to bronze; the original ivories turn to soft pewter. The carpet reads as a single dark colour painting from across a room and as a documentary of pattern grammar from chair-distance. The wool carries a faint sheen at low light angles that gives the surface depth.
