The happy-colours version of the patchwork carpet is the one piece in the series that does not pass through a single overdye bath. The salvaged squares of vintage wool are washed and sheared, but the original palettes are left alone. What you see across the field is the unedited chromatic memory of forty years of weaving, every patch carrying its own madder red, walnut brown, indigo blue, or saffron yellow into the new composition.

The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field uses around 60 squares of wool cut from Anatolian and Persian carpets woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. In India, three weavers worked together for around four months to assemble the patches on a fresh cotton warp, hand-knotting new seam stitches between the squares so that the carpet behaves as one continuous piece rather than a sewn assembly. The finished surface was sheared to a uniform low pile and washed in plain water to remove the loom dust and the last residues of the source rugs.

The composition

A patchwork without an overdye reads like a poem made of overheard sentences. Hot reds next to faded blues, dusty yellow next to cocoa brown, fresh ivory next to soft sage. Each square holds the leftover of a once-complete carpet, half a medallion or the corner of a vine border or a fragment of a prayer arch. The grid itself is the only formal device; everything else is the autobiography of the wool. The whole has the friendly chaos of a craft market seen at a great distance.

What you are buying

Without the unifying overdye the colour work is harder, not easier, and the European dealers who carry these multicoloured patchworks tend to price them above the monochrome versions, often pushing past five thousand pounds at boutique rate. The wool is already several decades old at the point of new sale, which means the rug arrives with patina rather than waiting for it. Continued use only deepens that depth.

The piece in a room

The colour mixture rewards a quiet room. White or off-white plaster walls, undyed linen or pale grey upholstery, light timber floors. The carpet does the chromatic work for the entire room. Pairs particularly well with mid-century Scandinavian seating, with brass and bone accents, with abstract art in single colours. Avoid printed cushions or strongly coloured throws above the field; the rug needs the air around it to read.

Conservation

Run a soft-suction vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Spin the carpet a half turn each spring so that no single colour fades faster than the others under window light. Blot accidents promptly with a clean dry cotton cloth. Plan a wool-conservator wash every six years to refresh the field. The carpet improves with age and decades of careful living.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
