Multi-colour patchwork is the original form the overdye category took before single-colour baths became fashionable. Each section retains a different dye treatment, and the rug reads as a mosaic of saturated tones held together by the underlying construction rather than by a single colour wash. Happy Colours leans into that lineage with a deliberately bright register across the field.

Older hand-knotted wool sections were sourced, sheared, and prepared for individual dye treatment. Two artisans worked the dye phase over roughly four months, dipping each section into a different colour bath calibrated to its starting condition. A finisher stitched the patches together on a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field built from blocks of bright pink, sun yellow, mid blue, deep green, and a warm tomato red, arranged without symmetry so the eye moves across the rug rather than landing on a centre. The underlying patterns of the original carpets ghost through as faint figures within each colour block. Each block carries the variation of its individual dye lot. The rug reads as a single composition built out of many smaller works.

The constituent wool is older and denser than any new fibre, and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the inverse of nearly every other domestic object.

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is for rooms that want a statement floor. The multi-colour field reads against white plaster walls and against bleached oak floors. It pairs with quiet upholstery in linen, with pale wood furniture, and with art that holds back so the rug can speak. Avoid placing strongly patterned curtains or busy wall colours nearby; the rug expects to be the graphic centre.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Lift spills with a clean white cotton cloth pressed against the pile. Avoid bleach. A wool conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years.
