The composition

Squares and irregular rectangles of madder red, deep indigo, mustard yellow, ivory, and rose pink, set against narrower seams of darker wool. Older medallion fragments, vine borders, and lattice repeats survive within each block, so the eye finds new motifs at every distance. The palette holds together because each fragment is wool-on-wool from the same broad regional vocabulary; it is busy without becoming chaotic.
