Greenery as a deliberate design colour is younger than most of the wool that carries it in this carpet. The shade was named the colour of the year by the Pantone studio in 2017, a fresh leaf green pitched between yellow-green and emerald, intended to feel like the underside of a young branch. Translating that contemporary green into a piece with the depth of an antique required a base of older wool, which is why the workshop turns to salvage rather than to new yarn.
The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field of this carpet is a quilt of patches cut from Anatolian and Persian rugs woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. In India, three weavers spent around four months reassembling the salvaged wool, hand-knotting fresh seam stitches between the squares, and binding the whole composition to a new cotton warp. The reassembled field went into a single immersion bath of fresh leaf-green dye, which sat at slightly different intensities on each patch depending on the original colour underneath.
The composition
Leaf green across the entire field, with the older fibres pulling the dye in different directions. Patches that began life with red grounds now read olive. Patches that began with strong indigo now hold a deep emerald. Patches that started ivory now glow almost lime. Faded medallions and ghost borders surface beneath the colour like a tree-line under spring leaves. The wool itself catches light at differing angles from patch to patch, animating the whole.
What you are buying
Patchwork rugs of this construction are routinely shown by Western interior dealers as collectible textile pieces, with comparable prices running in the four to six thousand pound range. This listing reflects a direct purchase from the Indian workshop tradition rather than a re-sale margin. The fibre carries between forty and eighty years of patina before any new use begins, so the carpet is already older than most of the homes it will enter. Value increases as the patina deepens further.
The piece in a room
Greenery at carpet scale gives a room the cool clarity of a garden in early light. The carpet supports raw timber, white walls, and unfinished brass beautifully. Sits well under a low-slung modern sofa with one or two pieces of antique furniture in the same composition; the carpet bridges the centuries. Avoid placing strongly patterned green upholstery directly above; let the field do the chromatic work alone.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly, beater bar off, in the direction of the low pile. Rotate the carpet a half turn at the start of each summer. Spills lift with prompt blotting; never use a household cleaner on hand-dyed wool. Schedule a wool conservator wash every six years to refresh the dye depth and remove embedded grit. Treated this way the carpet outlasts several rounds of upholstery.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
