Festival fuchsia is a noisy colour for a quiet object. It belongs to silk thread on a sari border, to the powder thrown across a temple courtyard at the start of spring, to bougainvillea drying against a whitewashed wall. To translate that energy into a hand-knotted wool carpet, the workshop starts not with new yarn but with old rugs and pulls them through a single immersion bath of magenta-fuchsia dye that lights the salvaged fibre from within.

The carpet measures 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) and is built from patches cut out of mid-twentieth-century Persian and Anatolian rugs, mostly woven between 1945 and 1980. Three weavers in India worked together over roughly four months, squaring the salvaged wool by hand, reassembling it into a continuous field on a new cotton warp, knotting fresh joining stitches between the patches, and finally lowering the entire piece into the fuchsia overdye. Each patch absorbed the colour at its own rate, leaving a quilt of related but distinct values.

The composition

Fuchsia across the field, but the field reads as a chord rather than a single note. Older indigo patches now hold a violet base. Older red patches glow almost coral. Patches that started ivory took the dye most fully and read as the brightest hot pink. Beneath the colour, half-medallions and ghost borders from the source rugs surface and recede. The grid keeps the brightness disciplined; the variation keeps it alive.

The pricing on this carpet reflects sourcing direct from the Indian workshop rather than a downstream re-sale margin. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, particularly as the saturation continues to settle into the patina over the next decade.

Fuchsia at this scale is the design decision around which the rest of the room arranges itself. It sits cleanly with white plaster walls, with raw oak or walnut floors, and with neutral upholstery in linen, bouclé, or undyed wool. It pairs well with brass and aged silver. Avoid printed textiles in the same room; the carpet expects to be the only chromatic event of consequence in the composition.

Conservation

Beater bars chew the surface of any low-pile knotted wool; keep the vacuum on suction only. Rotate the carpet 180 degrees each spring. Spills go cleanly with prompt blotting on a cotton cloth. Plan a specialist wool wash every six years, with rolling in cotton sheeting between any storage and the next use. Treated patiently, the carpet has eighty years ahead of it.
