Plum is the colour of fruit at the edge of going over, dark, dusty, with violet under the skin and a flicker of red at the deepest folds. It is also one of the older dye colours in the carpet world, traditionally pulled from a long simmer of madder root with iron mordant, the iron pushing the natural rose toward purple. The deep plum overdye on this carpet works in the same direction, but on wool that has already lived through forty years of accumulated colour.

The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field is a grid of patches sourced from worn Anatolian and Persian carpets woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. Three weavers in India needed close to four months to cut the salvaged wool into squares, reassemble them on a new cotton warp, hand-knot fresh seam stitches between the patches, and bind the whole structure to a continuous foundation. The finished field then went into a single deep plum bath that the older fibres took at unequal rates.

The composition

The plum sits as a single tonal wash across a quilt of underlying patterns. Patches that started life with strong indigo grounds now read aubergine. Patches that began ivory now glow almost rose where the dye sat fully. Half medallions, broken borders, and fragments of vine work float beneath the surface like the last frames of a faded photograph. The wool catches light in different planes from patch to patch, which is what stops the field from reading flat.

What you are buying

Patchwork wool of this size and vintage is shown in serious European interior galleries at four to six thousand pounds. The work behind it is the same: salvage forty-year-old hand-knotted wool, recompose it on a new foundation, overdye in a single immersion bath. The pricing on this listing reflects direct workshop sourcing from India rather than a Western dealer markup. As the wool continues to age, the patina deepens and the plum settles further into its character.

The piece in a room

Deep plum at this scale gives a room gravity. The carpet sits well under a long sectional in oatmeal or charcoal, lets brass lamps and walnut tables warm above it, and absorbs evening light into a glow rather than a glare. It also reads beautifully under a dining table where candle flame and pendant light pick the violet undertones out of the wool. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned upholstery; the carpet expects to lead.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly without the beater bar. Lift the carpet at corners every few months to check that no grit has settled into the warp. Rotate by half a turn each year. Blot accidents promptly with a clean dry cloth, never rub. A specialist wool wash every six years lifts embedded soil and refreshes the saturation. The piece is built to outlast the room around it.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
