Patchwork carpets carry a longer story than their seams suggest. The practice grew out of mid-twentieth-century European workshops salvaging fragments of worn antique Anatolian and Persian pile, sorting them by hand into colour families, then re-stitching the survivors into single fields that read as a kind of quiet archaeology. The result holds the weight of villages that once made each fragment, even as the recombined piece refuses any single regional attribution.

This particular rug was hand-knotted on a vertical loom in India and then taken through a deep over-dye in plum. Two weavers shared the loom, with a finisher attending the wash and shearing. The base wool is local highland sheep fleece, hand-spun in lengths thick enough to absorb the over-dye in two passes without the colour pooling. The shearing brings the older fragment patterning back to the surface in faded silhouette, so the plum reads first and the historical motifs surface a beat later.

The composition

The dominant note is a deep plum that has been pushed almost into oxblood at the corners and softened toward dusty rose at the centre. Beneath the over-dye, ghost arabesques, medallion fragments, and faded geometric borders surface in muted negative. The pile takes light unevenly because each block of wool came from a different original carpet, and that accidental tonal range is exactly what the over-dye was meant to amplify rather than mask.

What you are buying

Genuine antique patchwork rugs of comparable scale and palette move through European auction houses in the range of $4,000 to $8,000 when offered at all, and rarely in stable condition. This is a contemporary patchwork in the same craft tradition, sealed under modern over-dye and finished for daily wear. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, since the over-dye is itself an aged surface that gains rather than loses character.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits naturally under a two-seater sofa with a single low coffee table, or as a foot-of-bed runner across a king mattress. The plum reads as a grounding tone against pale plaster walls, brass lighting, and unfinished oak. Avoid placing it under a strongly patterned painting; the rug expects to hold the colour conversation in the room on its own terms.

Conservation

Rotate the rug end for end every six months so footfall and daylight age the surface evenly. Vacuum on suction only, with the beater bar lifted away from the pile. Blot any spill immediately with a clean white cotton cloth. A specialist hand wash every four to five years will lift accumulated dust without weakening the over-dye. With this rhythm, the piece runs four decades of household use comfortably.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
