Dark brown is the hardest tonal field a wool weaver can pull off. It will read flat under a single dye lot, and it will read muddy under a careless overdye. The patchwork tradition solves the problem sideways. Instead of trying to dye toward dark brown from undyed yarn, the workshop starts with rugs that already carry decades of layered colour and pulls them down into brown with a single deep walnut bath.
The patches in this 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field were salvaged from carpets woven between the late 1940s and the early 1980s across the Anatolian and Persian highlands. Three weavers in India worked together for around four months to cut, square, and reassemble the wool, hand-knotting new seams between the patches and binding the whole to a fresh cotton warp. The finished field was then submerged in a walnut-hull and iron overdye that pushed the original reds and blues into chocolate, espresso, and bitter cocoa.
The composition
A near-monochrome dark brown field with the architecture of a quilt. Each square holds a different value of the same dye depending on the original wool, the older indigos pulling toward black, the original ochres lifting into nut brown. Pattern fragments surface and disappear, a half medallion here, a corner spandrel there, never assertive enough to dominate the grid. The whole composition reads like burnished leather seen across a low room.
What you are buying
Comparable patchwork wool sells through European interior galleries and boutique dealers at multiples of this price, often staged in showrooms next to mid-century Italian furniture and lighting. The construction is identical, the source wool is identical, the overdye process is identical. Buying directly from the workshop trade rather than from a Western re-seller is what closes the gap. The carpet itself appreciates as the wool ages further and the patina deepens.
The piece in a room
Dark brown anchors a room. The carpet sits well in a library or study under bookshelves and a deep reading chair, where the brown supports the leather and timber rather than competing with them. Equally at home under a long dining table, where lighting from above lifts the brown into amber. Pairs cleanly with brass, with bone, with cream upholstery, and with strong coloured walls.
Conservation
Dark fields show lint and pet hair quickly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Rotate the rug 180 degrees each year. Treat spills by blotting outward with a clean cotton cloth, never by rubbing. A specialist hand wash every six years removes embedded dust and refreshes the dye depth. With this care the carpet is a multi-generational object.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
