Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet- Dark Brown 11073 8' x 10'

Dark brown as an overdye reads as walnut bark, espresso, and aged saddle leather depending on the light, and a good patchwork in this colour holds all three readings without contradiction. The depth comes from the older fibre absorbing the dye unevenly, and the variation across patches is what gives the rug its character. Flat brown is dull. Patchwork brown is alive.

Older hand-knotted wool segments were recovered, sheared, and washed clean of their original dye. Two artisans worked the dye phase over roughly four months, lowering each piece into a dark brown bath for forty-eight hours at temperature. A finisher stitched the patches to a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field of deep brown that varies from patch to patch between espresso, walnut, and a warmer cognac note. The seams are visible only at close range. Underlying carpet patterns ghost through as the faintest tonal shifts, more felt than seen. Under lamplight the brown picks up a russet edge along the highest points of the pile. Over two years the colour will deepen and the wool will polish under foot.
