Dark brown in the overdye register sits at the deeper end of the warm spectrum, closer to bitter chocolate than to chestnut, the kind of colour that absorbs ambient light rather than reflecting it. The form makes deep browns viable at floor scale because the under-pattern variation of the antique fragments prevents the wash from reading as a single flat plane, the failure mode of single-piece carpets in this register. The patchwork genre took its current shape across the past two decades through workshops using antique stock that had lost structural integrity but retained the chromatic depth of long-cured wool.

Three artisans selected the source carpets for tonal compatibility, joined the rectangular registers on a cotton scrim, and washed the field back to uniform pile. The bath used walnut hull, oak gall, and a small proportion of madder for the warm shift, sun-cured in air rather than in heat. The cure produced the slight saturation unevenness that distinguishes plant dye from industrial colour. Original wear patterns from the source carpets remain visible as faint articulation across the patches under the wash.

The composition

A deep brown field divided into rectangles, each holding the under-pattern of its source weaving; classical floral medallions here, geometric tribal repeats there, fragments of border running diagonally through two or three of the larger registers. The colour shifts subtly across the day; morning light brings the warm red note slightly forward and evening settles the field into the cooler chocolate register. The carpet reads as a unified dark plane from a distance and opens into many internal histories on close approach.

What you are buying

Single-source antique carpets of comparable fibre and pile age sell with European dealers at four to seven lakh rupees in working condition. The patchwork carries the same maturity of wool into a single coherent field that no single antique source could supply. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The dark brown continues to settle for the first two years as the wool oxidises and the warm red note develops slightly within the depth.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits in a study floor, a primary bedroom, or a sitting room arranged around a low table. Dark brown anchors a room rather than expanding it; bone plaster walls hold the colour, raw oak floors give it a warm landing, and brass picks up the underlying red note. The carpet pairs especially well with leather upholstery in similar warmth and with mid-century walnut cabinetry. Strongly patterned wallpaper competes with the field; quiet plaster lets it read at full depth.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year for even traffic and light exposure. Vacuum on suction setting only with the beater bar disengaged so the seams are not stressed. Blot spills straight down into the pile with a clean cotton cloth rather than working across. Engage a patchwork-trained wool conservator every four years for hand cleaning. The carpet runs forty to sixty years under those terms and the depth continues to develop across most of that span.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
