The form makes deep browns viable at floor scale because the under-pattern variation of the antique fragments prevents the wash from reading as a single flat plane, the failure mode of single-piece carpets in this register. The patchwork genre took its current shape across the past two decades through workshops using antique stock that had lost structural integrity but retained the chromatic depth of long-cured wool.

Three artisans selected the source carpets for tonal compatibility, joined the rectangular registers on a cotton scrim, and washed the field back to uniform pile. The bath used walnut hull, oak gall, and a small proportion of madder for the warm shift, sun-cured in air rather than in heat. The cure produced the slight saturation unevenness that distinguishes plant dye from industrial colour. Original wear patterns from the source carpets remain visible as faint articulation across the patches under the wash.

The composition

A deep brown field divided into rectangles, each holding the under-pattern of its source weaving; classical floral medallions here, geometric tribal repeats there, fragments of border running diagonally through two or three of the larger registers. The colour shifts subtly across the day; morning light brings the warm red note slightly forward and evening settles the field into the cooler chocolate register. The carpet reads as a unified dark plane from a distance and opens into many internal histories on close approach.

The carpet runs forty to sixty years under those terms and the depth continues to develop across most of that span.
