The overdye is a Turkish invention from the 1990s, born of a market for tribal carpets that had outpaced the supply of clean antiques. Cutting and pooling damaged pieces, then bathing the assembly in a single colour, recovered something usable from rugs that would otherwise have been firewood.
The fragments were cut from worn but structurally sound village rugs from the wider Persian and Turkish weaving regions, with the squares chosen for sound foundation rather than for pattern. After matching for pile height, they were stitched onto a cotton ground and submerged in a vat of a single deep brown bath dye for the overwash. 2 weavers shared the loom for roughly 3 months between cutting, re-knotting at the seams, and the dye work.
The composition
Up close, the rectangles disagree. One holds a cypress motif, the next a stepped medallion, the next an unornamented field. The overdye argues for a single read; the underlying pile keeps insisting on its sources. The tension is what gives the rug its energy.
What you are buying
A new piece in this tradition, with antique pile of comparable provenance and a properly executed overdye, lists at Sotheby's design auctions and Western dealer rooms in the $4,000 to $10,000 range. Direct workshop pricing in India removes the layers of margin that account for most of that gap.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) is the foyer or accent scale. The rug works under a console, beside a bed as a runner companion, or at the foot of a reading chair. The brown register sits comfortably against natural wood floors and lime-washed walls.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and light age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. The seams are the structural element to watch; if a join opens, a wool conservator can re-needle it in an afternoon. Hand-wash by a wool specialist every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
