Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet- Dark Brown 11073 12' x 15'

Dark Brown is the deepest register in the warm-wood over-dye palette, the chromatic equivalent of polished ebony at evening or wet bark after rain. The depth of the brown allows the original village cartoons to read more clearly than the lighter wood registers, because the brown carries warmth without competing visually with the underlying drawing. The result is a carpet that reads as one unified deep-wood mood from across the room and rewards close approach with a layered cartoon archaeology underneath.

Forty-five antique Turkish and Persian village fragments form the substrate of this carpet, each one a survivor from the worn antique repertoire that the patchwork tradition exists to rescue. The donors were sorted by warmth, cut to regular geometric panels, and joined with hand-stitched seams along the reverse over four weeks of assembly. The Dark Brown over-dye was applied in a controlled ambient bath at high saturation. Ten days of flat sun-drying brought the bath to its final settlement. Total time: six months of skilled labour.

The composition

The unified Dark Brown field holds the patchwork grid into one continuous saturated wood mood. The original village cartoons read through as warmer chromatic shifts within the dominant deep ground. There is no border. No central focus. The composition is intended to be read as one continuous chromatic field with internal weather. From a distance the carpet sits as architecture rather than as decoration. Up close, the layered cartoon vocabulary becomes legible.

Conservation

Spring and autumn half-turns. Weekly suction vacuuming, no beater bar. Spills addressed by blotting with clean cotton, working away from the patch seams. Patchwork-experienced wool conservator should hand wash the carpet every five years to preserve seam integrity and over-dye depth. The piece runs four to six decades.
