Dark brown is one of the most demanding registers in the wool dye tradition. The pigment must read as warm and not as black, with enough red and gold beneath it to remain a brown at low light, and the bath has to be matured slowly for the wool to take it without going dull. This patchwork edition uses a dark walnut overdye to pull a body of older hand-knotted fragments into a single dense field of bittersweet, near-coffee colour.

The carpet was hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation by three to four weavers in India and required close to seven months on the loom and finishing bench. Each fragment came in already woven in the asymmetric Persian structure before being cut, joined, washed, and dipped in the dark brown bath. The post-dye shearing took an additional fortnight by hand and brought the surface to a uniform low pile that lets the deep colour read continuously across what is technically a quilted assembly.

The composition

The visible structure is a deep ground in coffee, walnut, and forest. Beneath the bath the original medallions and vine borders remain present as low-contrast pattern; the reds turn to oxblood, the blues turn to deep teal, and the ivories turn to caramel. The carpet behaves like a piece of dark hand-finished suede from across a room, and reveals the classical pattern grammar only on close approach. The pile carries a soft sheen under warm interior light.

Rotate the carpet 180 degrees once a year. Vacuum weekly on suction only, with the beater bar disengaged. A specialist hand-wash every five to seven years restores the dye depth and brings up the highlight in the wool. The rug is built to outlast its first owners.
