Cyclamen takes its name from the woodland flower whose petals shift between deep magenta and rose, and the over-dye register pulls the patchwork panels into the same chromatic territory: a bright magenta-pink with rose modulations across the field. Pink in the over-dye palette is unusual because most workshops favour the chromatically safer registers. Cyclamen exists for the room that wants a saturated chromatic statement on the floor without committing to the heaviness of red or the gravity of burgundy.

Forty-six antique Turkish and Persian village fragments form the substrate, sorted with particular care for warmth and base value because bright over-dyes show donor inconsistency more readily than muted ones. Cut to regular panel geometry, the donor pieces were joined along the reverse with hand-stitched seams over four weeks of assembly. The Cyclamen over-dye bath was prepared at high saturation. Ten days flat in the sun finished the chromatic settlement. The total process took roughly six months.

The composition

The unified Cyclamen field carries the patchwork grid into one continuous saturated chromatic statement, the original village cartoons reading through as quieter modulations within the dominant pink ground. The over-dye intensity ranges from deeper magenta at the perimeter toward a softer rose through the centre. There is no border. No medallion. The composition is intended to be read as a single chromatic event, the textile equivalent of a major monochrome painting.

Hand-cleaning by a patchwork-experienced wool conservator on a five-year cycle. Working life roughly forty to sixty years on this care discipline.
