The patchwork carpet is a relatively young chapter in a very old story. In the early 2000s, weavers across the highland workshops began salvaging the worn fields of mid-century Anatolian and Persian rugs, cutting them into hand-sized squares and reassembling them as a single new field. The technique borrows from the boro mending of Japanese cotton and the album quilts of nineteenth-century New England, but the material is older than either. Each square in this carpet was once part of a complete rug woven sometime between the 1940s and the 1980s.
Three weavers worked the loom in India for roughly four months, hand-knotting fresh borders into the seams and binding the patches with a continuous warp. The salvaged wool was washed, sheared back to a uniform low pile, then submerged in a single overdye bath of cool blue. The bath stains the differing original palettes into one tonal field while leaving traces of the under-pattern visible like a ghost beneath ice.
The composition
Cool blue dominates, but it is not a flat blue. The dye sat unevenly on the older fibres, so each square reads at a slightly different value, the older madder reds pushing the blue toward violet, the original ivory grounds lifting it toward sky. Faded medallions, half-borders, and prayer arches surface and disappear as the eye crosses the field. The grid is the only constant. Everything else is the autobiography of the source rugs.
What you are buying
An equivalent overdyed patchwork in this size sells through Western dealers in the four to six thousand pound range, and the better galleries position them as collectible textile art rather than floor covering. This is the same construction, the same vintage source material, the same overdye process, at roughly a third of the dealer ask. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the older the underlying wool gets, the more it rewards the eye.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) belongs under a long sofa with the front legs on the wool, or under a ten-seat dining table with the chairs clearing the field at full pull. The cool blue settles best against warm woods, walnut, oak, teak, and against off-white or chalky plaster walls. Modern art holds up across it because the patchwork itself is already a composition. Period furniture also reads cleanly because the source rugs are themselves from another era.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet 180 degrees once a year so the seams age evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every six to seven years. Treated with reasonable care, a patchwork outlives several rounds of furniture and gains depth in the process.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
