Cool blue in the overdye family belongs to the steel-blue end of the spectrum, where the dye sits closer to slate than to navy. The colour holds its temperature without dropping into grey, which is harder than it sounds because the underlying wools all read the bath differently. Recovered hand-knotted wool segments were sheared down to a flat working pile and washed clean of their original dye. Two artisans handled the dye phase over roughly four months, lowering each piece individually into a cool-blue bath for forty-eight hours at temperature. A finisher stitched the patches to a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field of cool steel blue that varies in saturation across the rug. Some patches read denser and pull toward indigo; others sit lighter, closer to washed slate. The underlying patterns of the original carpets ghost through as faint tonal shifts. The seams are visible only at close range. Over the first two years the colour will settle by half a value and the wool will gain the slight sheen older fibre develops under foot.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate the rug end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never coloured. A wool conservator should hand-wash the piece every five years to restore lanolin and remove embedded dust. The dye is colour-fast under normal interior conditions.
