Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Cloud 11070 8' x 10'

Cloud is the lightest of the overdye palette and the most unforgiving. The colour reads as warm pale grey with a hint of bone, and any unevenness in the underlying wool prints through immediately. The patchwork overdye process accepts that reality and turns it into the design language of the rug, and the result here is a calm, almost atmospheric ground that lets a room breathe.

Older hand-knotted wool segments were recovered, sheared, and washed clean of their original dye. Two artisans worked the dye phase over roughly four months, lowering each piece into a cloud-grey bath for forty-eight hours and adjusting saturation by length of immersion. A finisher stitched the segments together on a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field of pale warm grey that holds tonal variation from patch to patch. Some sections read closer to bone, some pull toward soft taupe. The underlying patterns ghost through as the faintest tonal shifts, more felt than seen. The seams between patches read as quiet boundaries rather than hard lines. Over the first three years the colour will settle and the wool will polish under foot.

The wool beneath the overdye is older, denser, and more characterful than any new fibre the loom can source, and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The cloud field reads against white plaster, against pale oak floors, and against deep walnut joinery. Conservation

Suction vacuum weekly. Rotate the rug end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth from the edge inward. The pale colour shows soiling sooner than darker overdyes, which is the trade-off for its restraint. A specialist hand-wash every four years rather than five is sensible for this palette.
