The grey register the workshops call Cloud is the cool pale tone of overcast morning sky, lighter than atmosphere and cooler than dust, the kind of colour that disappears into a room rather than claiming it. The patchwork format makes pale tones possible at this scale; a single-piece weaving in cloud grey would read as wash, but the under-pattern variation of the antique fragments holds the field in articulated tension and keeps the surface alive. The form took its current shape in the past two decades through workshops experimenting with structurally tired stock that had retained its chromatic history.

Source carpets at least four decades old were chosen for tonal compatibility, joined on cotton scrim by three artisans, and washed back to uniform pile. The bath used a small proportion of indigo with oak gall and a faint addition of black walnut for the cool depth, sun-cured in air rather than in heat. Plant dye in this register holds an unevenness that industrial dye cannot reproduce; the pale grey shifts faintly across the field rather than reading as one frozen value. The original wear patterns remain visible as articulations across the patches.

The composition

A pale grey field broken into rectangles, each holding the under-pattern of its source carpet; classical floral medallions here, geometric tribal repeats there, fragments of border running through two or three of the larger registers. The cloud register sits at the cool end of grey and shifts faintly across the day. Morning light pushes the field toward white; evening settles it into a softer dove. The carpet reads as a near-monochrome plane at a distance and opens into many small histories on close approach.

Conservation

Rotate every six months for even traffic and light exposure. Vacuum on suction with the beater bar off so the cotton scrim is protected. Blot any spill downward with a clean cotton cloth rather than wiping. Engage a patchwork-trained conservator every four years for hand cleaning. Under those terms the carpet runs forty to sixty years and the cloud grey deepens slowly across most of that span.
