An overdyed patchwork is two acts of authorship laid over each other. The first weaver, sometime in the early twentieth century, set the pattern. The second hand, working a generation later, dissolves the original colours under a single saturating bath and lets the geometry come back through the wash.
Cuts of antique Turkish and Persian pile, sourced from carpets between sixty and ninety years old, were trimmed to standard rectangles, washed, and reassembled by hand on a cotton backing. The seams were closed with hand-needled wool thread. The composite was then submerged in iron-mordanted oak gall for the overdye, which cools the original palette and pulls the disparate fragments toward a unified tonality. 2 weavers shared the loom for roughly 3 months between cutting, re-knotting at the seams, and the dye work.
The composition
Colour is the unifier. Pattern is the texture under it. Some squares carry their original ivory grounds, lightened further by the wash. Others retain the rust and indigo of their first dyeing, now muted under cloud grey. The rug does not insist; it accumulates.
What you are buying
What the price reflects is the cost of the antique source carpets, the labour to cut and reassemble them, and the dye bath. The mathematics work out close to the cost of a new hand-knotted rug at the same density, without the long cultural depreciation that affects new production.
The piece in a room
At 4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) the rug occupies the floor between two facing chairs or anchors a small entry hall. The patchwork geometry holds at this scale because the squares are sized to be read at standing distance.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and light age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. The seams are the structural element to watch; if a join opens, a wool conservator can re-needle it in an afternoon. Hand-wash by a wool specialist every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
