Workshops that produce Cloud reliably are working at the top of the technique. Most studios will not attempt it.l/p>lp>Forty-eight antique Turkish and Persian village fragments form the substrate of this carpet, sorted with unusual care because the pale over-dye amplifies any chromatic difference between the donor pieces. Each panel was cut to regular geometry and joined with hand-stitched seams along the reverse over five weeks of assembly, longer than usual because the seam tension also has to be more even on a pale-ground carpet. The Cloud over-dye bath was prepared at low concentration to preserve the chromatic delicacy. Approach and the panel grid resolves, the original village cartoons reading as ghost modulations within the dominant dove-grey ground. There is no border. The composition is intended to be read as light rather than as a coloured ground.
