Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Cloud 11070 10' x 14'

Cloud, in this carpet, is taken at face value. The dye bath was set to read as the soft pewter of a sky between weather systems, neither white nor grey but the silvered tone the eye reaches for between the two. Overdyeing assembled hand-knotted fragments at that register asks for a very even bath; underset and the patches separate, overset and the underlying patterns disappear. The Cloud edition holds its position at exactly the point where the older designs remain visible as ghosted topography.

This 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation by three to four weavers in India over close to seven months. Each contributing fragment was tied in the asymmetric classical knot before being cut, joined, washed, and overdyed as a single panel. A finisher then took two weeks to even the pile by hand so the colour reads continuously across what is structurally a quilt of separately woven older pieces.

The composition

A field of soft pewter. The medallions, vines, and palmettes of the underlying fragments are all present but reduced almost to pencil lines. The reds shift toward dusty rose; the blues toward storm grey; the bone whites toward pearl. The result behaves like a very large piece of brushed silk in a gallery, where the eye reads colour first and pattern as a second movement. The hand of the wool gives the surface a soft sheen at low light angles.
