Chestnut belongs to the warm earth register of the patchwork overdye lineage, where walnut hull is layered with a small amount of madder to produce a deep brown that reads as warm rather than as muddy. The recipe was developed at an Anatolian workshop in the late 1990s and adopted by the Indian patchwork makers in the early 2000s. The Chestnut variation reads particularly well in panelled wood interiors where the rug is meant to ground the architecture rather than to introduce a separate colour register.
The base carpets were woven on vertical looms in India by three to four weavers per piece over five to six months, in hand-spun wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots. The patchwork construction took a further four weeks at a specialist workshop, with sections calibrated, hand-stitched at the seams, and reinforced with a cotton scrim at the back. The overdye bath used walnut hull and madder layered over three short dips, then a long sun-dry to settle the saturation into the deep chestnut register.
The composition
A continuous deep chestnut field with the underlying older Persian drawings reading through as tonal shadows of palmette, medallion, and vine. The brown is variegated, deeper where the original ground was rust or walnut, lighter where it was cream. The seams are visible on close reading and contribute to the composition. The border continues the patchwork field to the selvedge rather than terminating in a drawn band.
What you are buying
Patchwork overdye carpets in the warm brown register reach twenty to fifty thousand US dollars through the specialist Western dealers. This rug shares the construction discipline, the base carpet quality, and the overdye process of those dealer pieces. At one and a half lac it sits well below the dealer comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working library or panelled drawing-room scale. The deep chestnut grounds walnut and oak casework, leather binding, and brass detail. Pairs with terracotta plaster, raw linen, and a single large modern work above the sofa. The rug reads as architecture rather than as ornament.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Patchwork overdyes benefit from professional cleaning every four years rather than the standard six. The seams should be inspected at every clean. With this care the rug runs five decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
