Chestnut as a colour name belongs to a particular kind of warm reddish brown that European cabinetmakers prized in the nineteenth century. As an overdye on patchwork wool, the tone has to carry weight without going muddy, and the bath must be set hot enough for the older fibres to take the dye fully. This rug holds the colour cleanly across the entire field.

Sections of older hand-knotted wool carpets were recovered, sheared, and washed neutral. Two artisans worked the dye phase over roughly four months, lowering each piece into a chestnut bath for forty-eight hours at temperature. A finisher stitched the segments to a cotton backing and pile-evened the surface with a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A warm chestnut field that varies in saturation from patch to patch, holding a russet edge under daylight and pulling toward deep mahogany under lamplight. Underlying patterns ghost through as faint tonal differences rather than visible figures. The seams between patches are felt rather than seen. The colour will deepen by half a stop in the first two years and then stabilise.

Conservation

Suction vacuum weekly. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Lift spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed against the pile rather than rubbed. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years to restore lanolin and lift embedded dust. The carpet runs sixty more years on this care.
