Chestnut is the warm middle of the brown register, the colour of polished horse-chestnut shell with a slight red shift that distinguishes it from the cooler walnut tones above and the deeper coffee tones below. The patchwork form serves chestnut especially well because the under-pattern variation prevents the warm wash from reading as a flat brown, the failure mode of single-piece carpets attempting this colour. The genre took shape in the past two decades through workshops working with antique stock that had lost structural integrity but kept the chromatic depth of long-cured wool.

The source carpets in this piece span four decades or more of age. Three artisans assembled the rectangular registers on a cotton scrim, then washed the whole field back to uniform pile before lowering it into a sun-cured bath of madder, walnut hull, and a small fraction of indigo for the cooler depth. The bath cures in air rather than in heat, which is why the surface holds the slight irregular saturation of plant dye rather than the flat character of industrial colour. The original wear patterns remain visible across the patches.

The composition

A chestnut-brown field divided into rectangles, each holding the ghost of its source carpet under the wash; floral palmette repeats here, geometric medallions there, fragments of classical border running through two or three of the larger registers. The colour shifts across the day; morning light brings out the warm red note and evening settles the field into the cooler brown register. The carpet reads as a unified plane from across a room and reveals its many internal histories on close approach.

What you are buying

Comparable single-source antique carpets in this fibre and age trade with European dealers between four and seven lakh rupees with attribution. The patchwork carries the same maturity of pile into a single coherent field that no single antique source could supply. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The chestnut continues to deepen for the first two years and the warm red note settles into the field as the wool oxidises.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) suits a primary bedroom, a study floor, or a sitting area arranged around a low table. Chestnut holds against pale plaster walls and against bone-coloured upholstery. The colour pairs naturally with brass, with leather upholstery in similar warmth, and with both walnut and oak floors. Strongly patterned curtains compete with the under-articulation of the field; plain linen or wool curtains let the carpet read at full depth.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year for even light and traffic. Vacuum on suction with the beater bar off so the cotton scrim is protected. Blot spills downward with a clean cotton cloth, never wipe. Engage a patchwork-trained wool conservator every four years for hand cleaning. The carpet runs decades under those terms and the chestnut continues to develop across most of that time.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
