Chestnut belongs to the warm-wood end of the over-dye palette, the chromatic register of polished horse-chestnut shells: deep walnut at the perimeter, warmer caramel through the centre, with a touch of soft amber where the donor wool held more red. The warm-wood register has a particular technical advantage in patchwork construction because brown over-dyes preserve the natural lanolin in the donor wool more readily than cooler chromatic ranges, which means the finished carpet has a softer hand and a more luminous surface.
Forty-five village fragments make up the substrate of this carpet, each one drawn from the surviving panels of worn antique Turkish and Persian pieces. The donors were sorted by warmth, cut to regular geometric panels, and joined along the back with hand-stitched seams over a four-week assembly. The Chestnut over-dye bath was applied at high saturation, then ten days of flat sun-drying brought the chromatic register to its final settlement. The whole production, donor sourcing through release, took roughly six months.
The composition
Across the field the eye reads one warm wood mood, the chromatic equivalent of a polished walnut floor seen from above. Closer inspection reveals the panel grid and the original village cartoons reading through as warmer chromatic shifts within the dominant Chestnut ground. There is no border. No central focus. The piece is intended to be read as one continuous wood-coloured field with subtle internal weather. The Chestnut warms slightly across the first decade.
What you are buying
Patchwork over-dyes at 12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) clear at $9,000 to $20,000 in the European and US design trade. The carpet is workshop-direct from India, sold without intermediary margins. The Chestnut warm register holds particularly well because the chromatic settlement deepens rather than shifting hue across the years. The donor stock is irreproducible, which is the structural reason every patchwork carpet is one of one.
The piece in a room
12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) accommodates a generous lounge, a dining area for ten to twelve, or a primary bedroom with a king-sized bed and seating arrangement. The Chestnut palette pairs particularly well with chalk and oat walls, walnut and oak floors and joinery, brass and aged-gold detailing, leather upholstery in saddle and cognac, and any single antique element used as a focal piece. Suits library and study rooms.
Conservation
Spring and autumn half-turns. Weekly suction vacuuming with the beater bar fully disengaged. Spills lifted with clean cotton, blotting only, working away from the patch seam lines. Patchwork-experienced conservator hand-washes every five years. The carpet runs four to six decades on this care discipline.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
