Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Capri Breeze 11068 9' x 12'

Capri Breeze sits at the most chromatically saturated end of the cool overdye spectrum, where indigo is layered without madder so the resulting field reads as a clean Mediterranean blue rather than the muted teal or grey-blue of the more atmospheric variations. The patchwork tradition came out of Anatolian and Indian workshop experimentation in the early 2000s and the colour names attach to specific dye recipes rather than to geographic references. Capri Breeze is the recipe that holds the Mediterranean register.

The base carpets were woven on vertical looms in India by three to four weavers per piece, in hand-spun wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots, over five to six months. A working stretch of nearly six months saw four weavers at the upright loom. Sections were calibrated for thickness, hand-stitched, and reinforced. The overdye bath used pure indigo layered over four short dips to build the saturation slowly rather than dipping the rug once. The finished piece was sun-dried for several days and brushed back.

The composition

A saturated Mediterranean blue field with the underlying older Persian drawings reading through as tonal shadows of medallion, palmette, and vine. The blue is not flat. It carries variation from the underlying base sections, deeper where the original ground was indigo or madder, lighter where it was cream or beige. The seams are visible on close reading and contribute to the composition rather than detracting. The border continues the patchwork field to the selvedge.
