Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Capri Breeze 11068 8' x 10'

Capri Breeze sits at the lighter end of the overdye blue family, between turquoise and washed denim. The colour is hard to land cleanly because it must hold its brightness without going saccharine, and the older wool underneath has to absorb the dye evenly across patches that started life in different tones. When the bath is calibrated correctly, the result is a floor piece that brings a coastal lightness into a room without any of the kitsch that usually attends the colour.

Older hand-knotted carpet sections were sourced, sheared, and stripped of their original dye. Two artisans handled the cutting and dye phase over roughly four months, lowering each segment into a Capri Breeze bath for forty-eight hours. A finisher stitched the patches to a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field of soft turquoise-blue that varies from patch to patch in saturation. Some sections read closer to washed denim, others hold a brighter aqua note that catches under daylight. The seams are quiet. The underlying patterns of the original carpets ghost through as the lightest tonal changes. Over the first two years the colour will settle by half a value into something closer to old swimming-pool tile.

Patchwork overdyes from the European studios that pioneered the category are routinely listed at four to six lakh through Western dealers. This is a hand-knotted wool overdye in the same construction, sourced direct from the workshop, offered at a fraction of that figure. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating because its constituent fibre is older and denser than any new wool the loom could be supplied with.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) lifts a primary living room or a secondary bedroom. The Capri Breeze ground works against white plaster, against bleached oak floors, and against linen upholstery in oatmeal or bone. It pairs with brass lighting and with art that uses warm white grounds. Avoid placing the rug against deep navy or cobalt walls; they flatten the dye.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never coloured. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years to remove embedded grit and restore lanolin. The dye is colour-fast under normal interior conditions.
