Autumn as a colour register holds the warm earth spectrum: ochre, terracotta, walnut brown, faded madder, soft umber. The patchwork overdye lineage allows that whole spectrum to be held in a single composition by overdyeing rejoined sections of older village carpets in a calibrated bath of weld and madder rather than in a single dominant pigment. The result is a field that reads as a continuous warm composition while preserving the underlying drawings as tonal shadow.

The base carpets were woven on vertical looms in India by three to four weavers each over five to six months, in hand-spun wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots. The patchwork construction took four weeks at a specialist workshop, with sections cut, calibrated, and hand-stitched. The overdye used weld and madder layered over three short baths, then a long sun-dry to settle the saturation. The rug was brushed back and sealed at the back with a cotton scrim to reinforce the patchwork seams.

The composition

A continuous warm autumn field with the underlying older drawings reading through as tonal shadows of palmette and vine. The colour shifts across the field, deeper terracotta where the original ground was madder, soft ochre where it was cream, walnut brown where it carried the older outline tones. The seams contribute to the composition. The border is the field continuing to the selvedge.
