Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Autumn 11067 8' x 10'

Autumn as an overdye is not a single colour but a working palette. Russet, ochre, walnut brown, and a deep madder red are layered into the bath and allowed to settle on different sections of recovered wool at different intensities. The result is a field that reads as a season rather than a swatch, and that holds a particular kind of warmth in interior light.

Older hand-knotted carpet sections were sourced, sheared down to a flat working pile, and washed clean of original dye. Two artisans then worked the dye phase over close to four months, lowering each piece individually into a bath calibrated to its starting tone. A finisher stitched the segments together on a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field that moves from rust through ochre to walnut brown across the rug, with the seams between patches visible only on close inspection. The underlying carpet patterns ghost through as the faintest tonal differences. The whole reads as a single composition built out of many older works rather than as a collage. Over the first two years the rust will deepen and the ochre will warm by half a stop.

The carpet is built out of older hand-knotted wool, which is denser and more characterful than any new spinning, and it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or holds a dining table for six. The autumn palette pairs with cream plaster, with pale oak, with deep walnut joinery, and with leather upholstery in cognac or tobacco. Brass lighting picks up the ochre, and art that uses warm earth tones reads naturally above the field. Avoid icy whites and cool greys; they fight the warmth of the dye.

Conservation

Suction vacuum once a week. Rotate the rug end to end each spring and autumn. Treat any spill with a clean cotton cloth pressed against the pile, then air-dry. Avoid bleach and strong solvents. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years to restore lanolin and remove embedded dust. The carpet runs sixty years on this care.
