Autumn, as a colour idea in carpets, predates colour theory. Anatolian weavers reaching for madder root and walnut hull in the late autumn dye season were producing the rust, ochre, and tobacco palette long before designers gave it a season name. This patchwork edition pulls that palette to the front by overdyeing dozens of hand-knotted antique-tradition fragments in a warm, slightly smoked bath, so the rug reads as a single field of falling-leaf colour with the original pattern history readable underneath.

Three to four weavers and a finisher in India spent close to seven months on a 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) carpet. Wool was hand-knotted on cotton in the classical asymmetric structure at the original source workshops, with the panels cut, joined, washed, and bathed together to land the unifying autumnal tone. The finishing pass was carried out with hand shears to bring all the patches to the same low pile height, which lets the dye shift across the surface like sun on a dry meadow.

The composition

A symphony of warm browns. Russet, burnt sienna, terracotta, walnut, and faded maple sit next to one another with the darker indigos and forest greens of the underlying patterns reduced to grace notes. The medallions and vine borders of the originals remain visible as a faint topography. The colour story is intentionally hot but the cool blacks and bone whites of the pre-overdye palette keep the rug from sliding into a single warm wash.

Conservation

Rotate end-for-end every six months to even out sun bleaching and footfall. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Treat spills with a clean cotton blot and cool water; refer stubborn marks to a wool conservator. Hand-wash by a specialist every five to seven years. With this care the carpet is a multi-generational object.
