Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Aubergine 11066 8' x 10'

Aubergine is the most theatrical of the patchwork overdyes because the colour sits between purple and brown and reads differently in every kind of light. It pulls plum under daylight, eggplant under tungsten, and a near-black velvet under candlelight. Carrying that range across a stitched-together field of old wool is the kind of problem the overdye process was designed to solve.

Older hand-knotted wool sections were recovered, sheared, washed clean of their previous dye, then lowered into a controlled aubergine bath for forty-eight hours at temperature. Two artisans worked the cutting and dye phase over roughly four months. A finisher stitched the segments to a cotton backing and gave the surface its final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field of aubergine that varies from patch to patch in saturation rather than hue. The seams are visible only at close range. Underlying patterns ghost through as faint tonal shifts. The depth of the colour is the work, and the work is convincing because the underlying wool is dense, older, and absorbs dye unevenly in a way new fibre cannot replicate. The colour will deepen by half a stop in the first two years and then stabilise.

The aubergine reads beautifully against cream plaster, against pale oak, and against jewel-toned upholstery in emerald or oxblood. Brass and aged bronze fixtures pick up the warm undertone of the dye.

Conservation

Suction vacuum weekly. Rotate the rug end to end each spring and autumn. Lift spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed gently against the pile. The aubergine is colour-fast under normal conditions but reacts to bleach and to strong acid cleaners; both should be avoided. Hand-wash by a wool specialist every five years.
