Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Aubergine 11066 6' x 9'

Aubergine has a particular reputation in textile colour. It carries the depth of a saturated red and the calm of a dark blue at the same time, which is why it works on a carpet that needs to be both warm underfoot and quiet against the rest of the room. The Aubergine patchwork in front of you was assembled from older village panels and lowered into an aubergine immersion bath to deliver that double quality.

The source panels were originally hand-knotted across decades of village production. Cutting, washing, shearing, and re-stitching the panels into a new six-by-nine field took six to eight weeks of finishing work in India. The aubergine immersion bath unifies the panel tones and pile heights into a single composed surface while keeping the under-drawing visible.

The composition

An aubergine field reads first, with the original village geometries showing through in close plum and burgundy variations. Panel seams are integrated by hand-stitching that is visible only on close approach. The pile direction varies between panels, which gives the surface its slight, almost velvety movement under angled light. The colour will deepen with use and the under-pattern will read more clearly.

Equivalent patchwork rugs trade at European galleries at four to eight thousand euros routinely, and pieces with this depth of colour are increasingly difficult to source at any price. Vacuum weekly without the beater bar. Rotate end-to-end with the seasons. Blot spills with cotton cloth, never rub. A wool conservator should wash the rug every five to seven years. The piece expects a sixty-to-eighty-year life on these terms.
