Aubergine occupies one of the more difficult positions in the dye chemist's vocabulary, a deep purple that needs both red and blue pigment in correct proportion to keep from sliding into either grape or plum. The patchwork format gives the colour somewhere to land; the under-pattern of the antique source carpets prevents the wash from reading flat, and the seams hold the field together at the scale where a single-piece carpet of this colour would feel monolithic. The form began as a workshop response to structurally tired antique stock and has since become its own discipline, with overdye colourists and patchwork joiners now working as specialised hands within the trade.

The source carpets in this piece were chosen for tonal compatibility, joined on a cotton scrim by three artisans, and washed back to a uniform pile. The bath used logwood, indigo, and a small proportion of madder to push the purple toward the warmer aubergine register rather than the cooler eggplant. Curing happened in air under sun rather than in heat, the slow process that holds the unevenness of plant dye rather than the flatness of industrial colour. The wear patterns of the original carpets continue to read through the wash.

The composition

A deep aubergine field divided into rectangles, each holding the ghost of its source carpet beneath the wash; classical floral repeats here, geometric tribal forms there, fragments of border running diagonally through two or three of the larger registers. The depth of the colour shifts across the day; afternoon light brings the warm red note forward and evening settles the field into the cooler blue register. The carpet reads as a single jewel-toned plane from a distance and opens into many internal histories on close approach.

What you are buying

Antique single-source carpets in equivalent fibre and age trade through European dealers at four to seven lakh rupees with provenance. The patchwork delivers the same pile maturity in a single coherent field that no antique source could supply alone. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The aubergine continues to deepen for the first two years as the wool oxidises into its final register.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits in a sitting area, a primary bedroom, or beneath a small dining table. Aubergine wants a quiet ground around it; pale plaster, bone linen, and raw oak hold the colour, while strongly patterned walls fight it. The carpet pairs well with brass, with walnut, and with the muted greens of a planted interior. A single graphic painting on the long wall completes the room.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum on suction only with the beater bar disengaged so the cotton scrim is protected. Blot spills downward into the pile with a clean cotton cloth, never wipe across. Use a patchwork-trained wool conservator every four years for hand cleaning. The carpet runs forty to sixty years under that regime and the aubergine continues to develop across most of that span.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
