Patchwork rugs grew out of a practical problem. Worn antique carpets were too damaged to sell whole and too valuable to throw away. Cutting the surviving pile into rectangles, rejoining them, and washing the seams under a single dye solved both halves of the problem at once.
Each square was extracted from a parent carpet in the eight to ten knot range per linear inch, washed to remove a century of foot traffic, and re-knotted into a new whole. The dye bath used for the overdye was logwood and madder, applied at low temperature so the underlying patterns survive the wash as ghosted geometry. 2 weavers shared the loom for roughly 3 months between cutting, re-knotting at the seams, and the dye work.
The composition
The aubergine wash settles like weather over the assembled fragments. Borders survive in faint outline. Medallions emerge as silhouettes rather than statements. The eye does not rest in one place; it moves across the surface the way it moves across a Rauschenberg combine.
What you are buying
A new piece in this tradition, with antique pile of comparable provenance and a properly executed overdye, lists at Sotheby's design auctions and Western dealer rooms in the $4,000 to $10,000 range. Direct workshop pricing in India removes the layers of margin that account for most of that gap.
The piece in a room
At 4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) the rug occupies the floor between two facing chairs or anchors a small entry hall. The patchwork geometry holds at this scale because the squares are sized to be read at standing distance.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and light age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. The seams are the structural element to watch; if a join opens, a wool conservator can re-needle it in an afternoon. Hand-wash by a wool specialist every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
