Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet- Atmosphere 11065 9' x 12'

The vintage patchwork tradition was developed in Anatolian and Indian workshops in the early 2000s as a way to bring older village carpets, sometimes worn or damaged at the pile, back into useful service as collectible pieces. Sections of older hand-knotted base carpets are cut, calibrated for thickness, and rejoined into a single field by hand-stitched seams, then the whole new composition is overdyed in a single calibrated bath. The Atmosphere variation is the cooler register of the lineage.

The original base carpets were woven on vertical looms in India over the last fifty to a hundred years by three to four weavers each, in hand-spun wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots. The patchwork construction took a further four weeks at a specialist workshop. The overdye bath used indigo and weld layered to read as soft atmospheric grey-blue. The seams are hand-stitched and reinforced. The finished rug reads as a single composition rather than as a collage of pieces.

The composition

A field of variegated atmospheric grey-blue with the underlying older drawings reading through as tonal shadows of medallion, palmette, and vine, each shadow held in a different register according to which base carpet it came from. The seams are visible on close reading and read as composition rather than as construction. The border is a continuation of the field, the patchwork running to the selvedge. The colour shifts gently across the rug as the eye moves over different base sections.
