Atmosphere is one of those colour names that sounds vague until you see the actual register, a cool dust-grey with a faint warm shift that holds light the way a misted morning holds light. The patchwork construction is what makes the colour work; a single-piece weaving in this tone would read flat, but the assembled fragments hold enough internal variation to keep the field active without appearing busy. The genre emerged from the workshops working with structurally tired antique stock in the past two decades, and the form has now been developed enough to read as its own discipline rather than as salvage.

Source carpets were drawn from antique wool at least four decades old, cut into rectangular registers, and joined on a cotton scrim by three artisans over several days. The full carpet was hand-washed and sheared, then lowered into a single immersion bath of cool grey produced from oak gall and a small proportion of indigo. The bath cured in air rather than in heat, which is why the surface keeps the irregular saturation of plant pigment. Wear patterns from the source carpets remain visible as faint articulations across the patches.

The composition

A dust-grey field broken into rectangles, each one holding the ghost of its original pattern beneath the wash; floral palmettes here, geometric tribal repeats there, classical borders running through one or two of the larger registers. The atmosphere reading sits between cloud and stone. Light shifts the surface across the day; morning brings the cool note forward and evening settles it into a warmer register. The carpet rewards both close inspection and the long view.

Rotate twice a year for even traffic and light exposure. Vacuum at low suction with the beater bar off so the cotton scrim is not stressed. Blot spills downward with a clean cotton cloth rather than working across the pile. Engage a patchwork-trained conservator every four years for cleaning. The carpet runs forty to sixty years under those terms and continues to deepen the whole time.
