The patchwork carpet is a relatively young form built on a very old practice. Workshops across western and central Asia have always salvaged worn-out classical pile rugs by reweaving sound fragments into smaller pieces, and modern Indian ateliers took that habit to its logical conclusion by piecing dozens of rectangles into a single composed field. The Atmosphere edition takes that idiom and runs it through an overdye bath that pulls every fragment into one weather-grey atmosphere of softly luminous tone. The eye reads the rug as one painting first and as a quilt of histories second.

Three to four weavers shared the loom for close to seven months on this 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) commission in India. Each fragment was hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at the original workshop where it was first made, then washed, sheared low, and bathed in a single muted dye lot to harmonise the patches into the soft slate-and-mist palette the Atmosphere name suggests. The hand-finishing took a further fortnight of clipping and contouring after the loom work was complete.

The composition

The field reads as a low cloud cover. Dozens of original Persian and Turkish patterns sit side by side under a wash of cool grey, with the older madder reds reduced to a soft rosewood and the indigos pulled toward storm blue. The pattern lines stay legible but the colour story unifies. From across a room the rug behaves like a single tonal painting; from a metre away it reveals the medallions, vines, and lattices that built it.

Conservation

Rotate the rug 180 degrees once a year to even the wear at the entry side. Vacuum on suction only, with the beater bar lifted, every week or two. Blot accidents with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, and call a wool-trained conservator for any spill that does not lift in five minutes. With this regimen the rug runs sixty years comfortably.
